GLACG 2010 Pilot Program
GLACG is collaborating with area schools on a pilot program
for 2010. The program will feature classroom instruction and hands on
training with a goal of teaching the skills needed for successful organic
gardening. Objectives include developing an understanding of the garden
ecosystem, organic techniques for promoting plant growth and managing
garden pests and disease. Students will learn the basic principles of
planting, managing and harvesting an organic garden.
Student Participants
Student participants in the GLACG 2010 pilot program are expected to
(1) practice herbicide-free gardening, (2) maintain a weed-free garden
plot throughout the growing season, (3) manage their garden plot on
a regular basis, and (4) respect neighboring gardeners.
Master Gardener Participants
Master gardener participants in the GLACG 2010 pilot project will sign
up for volunteer hours at the garden site. You will be expected to work
closely with student participants to share your knowledge of good gardening
practices. Participants will also be offered shared plots in the community
garden, with produce to be contributed to area food banks.
GLACG
GLACG will provide 20' x 20' garden plots for particpating student groups,
spring tilling, mulch for plots and walkways, organic fertilizers and
a source of water for garden plots. GLACG will work to ensure experienced
gardeners as advisors through the growing season and will coordinate
activities with schools for whom the pilot project will be used as a
part of the school curriculum.
